ALLAN AMATO - 2008 GALLERY SHOW - PHOTOGRAPHER

From the dark edges of the dream world to the erotic scenes of modern mythology; from the surreal fantasy life of high fashion to the volatile currents of the underworld; from the chaotic noise of the 21st Century to the organic backdrop of history… photographer Allan Amato paints on the canvas of life, through the eye of his lens.

Born in Zimbabwe, Allan began his visual quest in faraway lands.  He arrived in the US at the age of twelve and spent his formative years filling the artistic coffers that would eventually lead to his passion for photography.

In that time, he studied history in college, had a brief stint as a model and garnered some success in the music industry. But the lure of the camera continued to entice him.  Entirely self-taught, Allan has said his career began almost as an afterthought, even putting the camera down for four years after 2001.  But following the disaster of Hurricane Katrina and after months of reflection, he returned to photography in earnest, realizing that nothing was more important than pursuing a dream.

Traveling as far away as Brazil and the twisted freeways of Los Angeles during rush hour traffic, Allan has focused entirely on the alchemy of his vision, still utterly in love with the art and dreaming up vastly more stories than he can possibly document. Allan’s photographs are evocative three-dimensional scenes in a two-dimensional medium.

He speaks not just with his photography or with his paintbrush but with an emotional sensibility that captures a world that is both whimsical and darkly beautiful.

Allan’s talent lies in his artistry, but his gift lies in what he sees, how he perceives what is before him and how he brings that to light...
